Held annually in Ubud, Bali’s cultural heartland, Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is Southeast Asia’s flagship literary event. Praised worldwide for its diverse and intimate programme, it gathers over 150 of the world’s most exciting writers, thinkers, and performers for four days of electrifying conversation, thoughtful debate, and joyful celebration of literary culture. 

Alongside author interviews and panel discussions, the festival has a wide-ranging offering of Indonesian dance and performance, literary lunches, guided tours of Ubud’s famous markets, temples and rice fields and late-night comedy, musical, and spoken word galas – as well as book launches, workshops, and events designed to enrich and inspire the imaginations of emerging writers and young people.

In 2023, Ubud Writers & Readers Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary. Conceived in 2004 as a community-healing response to the Bali bombing in 2002, the last two decades has seen the festival grow significantly and develop a loyal audience. Over the years, it has showcased Indonesian literary talent as well as international authors such as Nick Cave, Richard Flanagan, Hanya Yanagihara, Jeffrey Eugenides, Colson Whitehead, Anne Enright, Teju Cole, Yotam Ottolenghi, Fatima Bhutto, Mohsin Hamid, Etgar Keret, Audrey Magee, Shehan Karunatilaka and many more – all in beautiful tropical surroundings.

The 2024 Festival

The festival returns for its 21st edition from 23-27 October to spark ideas, foster dialogue and provide a space for engaging world voices.

This year’s theme, Satyam Vada Dharmam Chara – which can be translated to ‘speak the truth, practice kindness’ – is an invitation to find our way towards building an environment where integrity and compassion are the guiding principles of our interactions and relationships. In a world in which spoken and written words often become blunt weapons in combat, the 2024 festival wants to look far within, remembering and discussing the future of the small works of writers and readers who create goodness in the world of literature. It explores how writers influence the future of literature amid the rapid advancement of technology and information, grounded in the principles of goodness and truth, and how these writers emerge as leaders and thinkers who authentically embody kindness in both their words and actions.

The first speaker lineup features the award-winning Indian author and prominent global thinker, Amitav Ghosh; multifaceted Chinese-French-American writer and Women’s Prize for Fiction 2024 nominee, Aube Rey Lescure; Vietnamese-born Australian writer of The Boat, Nam Le; 2022 International Booker Prize nominee, Bora Chung; and Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal poet, artist, and author of seven acclaimed books, Ali Cobby Eckermann. It also includes British writer and journalist, Sathnam Sanghera; talented Indonesian actress and film producer, Lola Amaria; and acclaimed Australian-Malaysian author and poet, Siang Lu.

_{1 The promoter is Service95 Limited (“Promoter”) of 88-90 Baker Street, London, United Kingdom, W1U 6TQ. The title of the competition is “Win Tickets To Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2024 And A Luxury Stay In Bali”.
2 The competition is open to everyone aged 18 or over, excluding (a) employees of the Promoter or its holding or subsidiary companies; (b) employees or agents or suppliers of the Promoter or its holding or subsidiary companies, who are professionally connected with the competition or its administration; or (c) members of the immediate families or households of (a) and (b) above.
3 In entering the competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and eligible to claim any prize you may win.  The Promoter may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the competition.
4 The Promoter will not accept competition entries that are (a) automatically generated by computer or created by artificial intelligence (including but not limited to chatbots such as ChatGPT or similar software applications); (b) completed by third parties or in bulk; or (c) incomplete.
5 The competition will open on Wednesday 24 July at 8am BST and will close on Wednesday 31 July at 11.59pm BST (“Closing Date”). All competition entries submitted after the Closing Date will be automatically disqualified.
6 To enter the competition the entrant shall go to the Promoter’s Instagram account, follow @service95 and @ubudwritersfest, and leave a comment with the current book the entrant is reading on the Promoter’s competition post and post to stories, tagging the Promoter (@service95). 
7 A random draw  to select the winners, supervised by the Promoter, will take place within 14 working days of the Closing Date.
8 No purchase is necessary and there is no charge to enter under paragraph 7 above.
9 The Promoter will not accept (a) responsibility for competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed in transit, regardless of cause, including for example, as a result of any posting failure, equipment failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware of software failure of any kind; or (b) proof of posting or transmission as proof of receipt of entry to the competition.
10 The prize is two 4-Day Festival Passes for the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2024, taking place between 23-27 October 2024, with an exclusive invitation for two to its prestigious Opening Gala event on 23 October 2024 and a five-night stay at Honeymoon Guesthouse, Jl. Bisma, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia. The winners will each receive a Standard room with air conditioning for two people at the Honeymoon Guesthouse. The prize also includes breakfast for two people for each night.
11 The prize is subject to availability. The prize is non-negotiable, non-transferable, non-exchangeable, and no cash alternative is available. It may be possible to redeem both bundles of 4 x Day Festival Passes for the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2025, with dates to be announced in December 2024. The Promoter reserves the right to replace the prize with an alternative prize of equal or greater value if circumstances beyond the Promoter’s control make it necessary to do so.
12 The Promoter will contact the winner personally as soon as practicable after the Announcement Date, through Instagram, to request the winner’s contact information, including name, address, email address and telephone number and any information reasonably requested by the Promoter to verify the correct identity of the winner and the postal/email address where the prize is to be sent. The winner will be sent their prize within 14 days of confirming that information to the Promoter’s reasonable satisfaction. The prize may not be claimed by a third party on your behalf.
13 The Promoter will make all reasonable efforts to contact the winner. If the winner cannot be contacted or is not available, or has not provided the information within 7 days as set out in the clause above, the winner’s claim will become invalid and the Promoter reserves the right to choose another winner from the remaining eligible entries by the method set out at clause 7 above. The Promoter does not accept any responsibility if you are not able to take up the prize.
14 By submitting a competition entry, you are agreeing to be bound by these terms and conditions.
15 You will be responsible for the costs of any travelling involved incidental to the fulfilment of the prize, plus any travel insurance, the costs of transfers to and from airports or stations, food and drink, spending money, tax or personal expenses. Any other costs incurred in addition to those set out above and that are incidental to the fulfilment of the prize are the responsibility of the winner.
16 The Promoter must either publish or make available information that indicates that a valid award took place. To comply with this obligation the Promoter will send the surname and country of the winner to anyone who emails info@service95.com or writes to the address set out in clause 1 (enclosing a self-addressed envelope) within 1 month after the Closing Date. If you object to any or all of your surname and country being published or made available, please contact the Promoter.
17 If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, the Promoter, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to exclude you from participating in the competition.
18 The decision of the Promoter regarding any aspect of the Competition is final and binding in all matters, and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.
19 Insofar as is permitted by law, the Promoter, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize except where it is caused by the negligence of the Promoter, its agents or distributors or that of their employees.
20 By submitting your competition entry and any accompanying material, you agree to (a) assign absolutely to the Promoter all your intellectual property rights held in the competition entry with full title guarantee; and (b) waive absolutely all moral rights, in and to your competition entry and otherwise arising in connection with your entry to which you may now or at any time in the future be entitled under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 as amended from time to time and under all similar legislation from time to time in force anywhere in the world. You agree that the Promoter may, in their sole discretion, make your entry available in any media, whether now known or invented in the future, and in connection with any publicity of the competition. You grant the Promoter a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable licence in perpetuity, for the full period of the intellectual property rights in the competition entry and any accompanying materials, to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-licence the intellectual property rights in the competition entry and any accompanying materials for such purposes.

22 The Promoter reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the prize competition where it becomes necessary to do so.
