Troye Sivan’s Top 5 LGBTQIA+ Spots In Melbourne
As a pop star, social media personality, model, actor and perfumer, Troye Sivan has always defied definitions. Rising to fame after making his music debut on an Australian TV show in 2006, Sivan released his first EP, Dare To Dream, the next year. In 2013, he signed on with Universal Music Australia. Always true to himself, he uploaded his own coming-out story to his YouTube channel that same year, sharing it with millions.
Reflecting on this transformative period, Sivan offers insights during his guest appearance on our podcast Dua Lipa: At Your Service. Speaking to Dua, he says, “I wanted to live my life… I was scared that someone was going to out me, and I was about to sign a record deal. I did not want them to be able to tell me to stay in the closet because I was super comfortable with myself. So I just saw it as an opportunity to give back to the community that helped me.”
Now 28, Sivan hasn’t stopped. In an Instagram announcement for his 2024 UK and European tour for his album Something To Give Each Other, he said, “I want this to be the pop show. It has to be the party. It has to be the best time of your lives, the best night of my life, and now it’s finally coming.”
Also, in the podcast episode, Dua reminisced about touring with Sivan in North America in 2016: “It’s one of my fondest memories ever, and it’s also one of the proudest tours that I’ve ever been a part of. I’m not just saying this because I’m talking to you, but really, it completely changed my life.”
Here, Sivan shares five LGBTQIA+-friendly spots he recommends to visit in his home city of Melbourne.
- Hares & Hyenas – A queer bookstore in Melbourne with a beautiful new home in the Victorian Pride Centre.
- Victorian Pride Centre – Speaking of! This is the first purpose-built centre for Victoria’s LGBTIQIA+ communities in a beautiful building in St Kilda.
- Sircuit – I’ve had many, many a drunken, sweaty night here – a classic queer club in Fitzroy.
- The Peel – A dive bar; go there after Sircuit.
- Any wine bar – One of my favourite things about Melbourne is how queer and safe the whole city feels. Go eat and drink at any one of our wine bars/restaurants.
