This One Thing... Flouxus Zine
Belgium-born, Berlin-based Louie Van Nieuwenborgh discovered his passion for baking as a teenager, publishing his first recipe book aged just 16. Fast forward to 2021 and he is the creator behind the baking-with-a-twist zine Flouxus, with the inaugural print issue titled The Baking Edition: Recipes For Kinksters.
As an active member of Berlin’s renowned kink scene, Van Nieuwenborgh’s desire was to blend the allure of club culture with his other great passion: food. He recalls: “I would ask my friends and fellow kinksters about their favourite foods and recipes. Then, I would prepare the dishes and photograph them in the context of their kinks.”
Drawing inspiration from the experimental Fluxus art movement of the 1960s and 1970s, which emphasised the artistic process over a finished product, Van Nieuwenborgh sought to create a platform that defied convention and the predictable content typically associated with the baking world. “It doesn’t have to conform to the usual kitchen context,” he explains. “I don’t need to be on the cover (of the magazine), sat on a bicycle with a basket full of baked goods. It should be surprising.”
The upcoming edition, Food Unleashed, which comes out 1 November, will explore a different theme. Moving away from kinks, Van Nieuwenborgh’s next zine will more broadly reflect the “subconscious, set against the backdrop of surprising delights”.
Flouxus takes baking out of the cosy comfort of the home, embracing a rawer, more unpolished aesthetic. “My friends and I often gather to cook brunch together before heading to party at Berghain on Sundays,” says Van Nieuwenborgh. “So Flouxus is really a combination of all these fun moments, and I hope it shows people that baking doesn’t always have to be something traditional. But I also want people to know you can bring an apple cake to a house party and be the most popular person in the room!”
